Work and Life Tune-ups
I love connecting with you through this newsletter. Sharing experiences, resources, and stories has deepened my own thinking — and I’ve heard from many of you that it’s been meaningful for you, too.
But lately, I’ve been sensing some energy shifts. And when something feels out of whack, I’ve learned to pay attention.
One of my favorite tools for tracking down what's out of sync comes from Designing Your Life: The Work View and Life View exercises. They ask deceptively simple questions like:
- just what is "work"?
(is it only the activities we get paid for?)
- what is work for anyway?
(beyond the roof over our head and food in our belly necessities)
- why are we here?
- what are the roles of joy, suffering, peace, strife and other experiences in our lives?
Big questions, for sure. But when I answer them with intention (and in the light of day, not at 2am), they work like a compass to reset my course.
I wrote out my Life and Work Views a few years ago, but just like car tune-ups, it's absolutely worth doing this every so often. And this time around, I realized some gears were getting overused while others weren’t used enough.
So with this 2025 edition, I realized this newsletter was one of the gears that needed attention. I enjoy it, but it's not quite in sync with my priorities.
So here’s what that means: I’ll be moving this newsletter from bi-weekly to monthly, starting October 5th. You’ll still get thoughtful stories and curated resources — just once a month instead of every other week. It's not a huge change, but enough to give other activities more attention, focus and energy.
One of those activities is my other newsletter, The Open Line. It’s also story-rich but focused on modern leadership through communication — things like why convincing kills connection, how listening builds trust, and what presence looks like beyond performance. If that sounds like your kind of conversation, reply to this email and I’ll add you in.
And because I know many of you want mid-career resources more often than once a month, I’ve pulled together some trusted voices worth following at the end of this letter.
Speaking of resources, if you'd like to see the full list of questions and instructions for the Life View and Work View exercises, send a reply and I'll send them along to you. I absolutely recommend it!
Thanks for being part of this journey — and for letting me share what’s giving me energy, focus, and hopefully, a little more meaning.
Gratefully,
Jackie
Mid-Career Coaches, Consultants, Creators
Lauren Greiff
Rebel Gen X energy on her LinkedIn and podcast "Career Blast In A Half", she's a career coach like no one else.
Maureen Clough
Rebel Millenial energy galore as she rails against ageism in Corporate America. She brings in some great guests on her podcast "It Gets Late Early" and doles out hot takes on LinkedIn.
Colleen Paulson
Colleen focuses on tactical job search tactics and techniques, specifically for older workers ... as in 40+ (I still don't see 40s or even 50s as being 'older' LOL). She's got a huge following on LinkedIn and is very helpful and respectful with her posts. Lots of commiserating and support in the comments, which can be helpful too!
Lyndsey Simpson
She founded a recruiting consultancy for 55+ workers, which has a job board of roles from companies who make extra effort to welcome older workers. While most of them are in the UK, as that's where she and her company (55redefined) are located, it's really interesting to follow how the UK and some of these companies are addressing ageism.
Jennifer Arthurton
Her podcast "Old Chicks Know Shit" runs the gamut of mid-life issues from career, dating, to health and more. The title alone is worth a mention in this list, but then Jennifer backs it up with some fascinating conversations.
