Weathering the storms
There’s a hole in our floor and it's the reason I stayed calm during last week's storm.
It’s 2.5 feet wide, 4 feet long, and instead of lowering our property value, it actually increases it. More importantly, it increases our sense of security.
It’s a tornado shelter.
And last weekend, we called it into action.
—–
In the days leading up to Saturday March 15th, weather forecasters started raising concerns about a system coming in - like a WEEK before that Saturday.
Then as each day brought more information, the concerns continued to ramp up. They started us off at 2 out of 5 for the severe weather threat level, and by Friday evening, we were right at the edge of 4, leading to the 5 level.
This has only happened about three or four times in the past five years. And it definitely had my attention.
During a previous 5/5 event, our area was hit by one of the strongest tornadoes in a generation: the EF-5 of April 27, 2011. Gratefully, our home was not damaged, but it rattled us for sure. That’s when we started thinking about a shelter. It only took a few more storm systems to get that plan into action. We quickly began to see a pattern of tornado tracks that were getting too close to our property.
So as I sipped my coffee Friday morning, catching up on the overnight weather models, I began to get our storm plan in place.
Airing out the tornado shelter and swiffering out its cobwebs. (honest to goodness, I felt like I was working one of those cotton candy machines)
Checking lantern batteries, charging cell phones, and gathering snacks. ('cuz if I’m riding out a storm, I’m doing it with peanut butter & ritz crackers, thank you very much!)
I also went around each room, the garage and garden shed taking pictures in case we needed to replace and rebuild. (could a life really be catalouged in just a few snapshots?)
But as I went about these tasks, I didn’t feel panicked. Sure, I got a little nervous now and then, especially as the weather system started to take shape, but I remember feeling grounded.
I remember distinctly feeling that whatever happened, we would be OK. Yes, it might be something that completely alters our life as we know it. Yes, it could be extremely challenging. But after seeing decades of storms pass through and the subsequent survival stories, after years of building our safe space, after days of prep and planning for this particular storm, I just felt centered and confident.
_____
We prepare for physical storms, but what about the storms that hit our careers—the layoffs, the shifts, the uncertainty?
What if you could face those with the same kind of steady confidence?
Because here’s the thing: it wasn’t wishful thinking that made me feel calm as the storm rolled in.
It was preparation.
I’d been through enough storms to recognize the signs, understand the patterns, and have a plan in place.
And when it comes to the career storms hitting right now - layoffs, shifting policies, economic uncertainty - the same principles apply.
