Let's Explore
Remixes & Recipes
Here in the holiday season, the kitchen becomes a hub of activity, with favorite recipes getting their annual spotlight. As I flipped through a few of mine recently, I couldn’t help but notice how much a recipe parallels my new concept: the Mid-Career Remix.
Both involve combining various elements to create something new and unique. And just like a recipe, your remix is deeply personal. You might start with a traditional foundation, but you add your own flair and ingredients to make it yours.
Even with the same starting elements, small tweaks can create something entirely different. Chocolate chip cookies can transform into blondie bars. Spaghetti ingredients can reimagine themselves as Cincinnati chili. In careers, creative directors can pivot into coaching, and figure skaters can become fashion icons (more on that in a moment!).
The beauty of a remix lies in its flexibility: you can reinvent your career without discarding the skills and experiences that brought you here.
If you missed my previous email, here’s a quick recap of the Mid-Career Remix: it’s a fresh perspective that reframes your experiences, skills, and strengths, helping you reclaim your value and redefine your future.
Vera Wang: From Ice Skating Rinks to Bridal Couture
Take Vera Wang, one of the most iconic bridal designers of our time. Her path? Far from linear.
She began as a world-class figure skater, missing an Olympic bid by a razor-thin margin. Pivoting, she pursued art history in college while dressing retail windows. That’s when her talent for fashion caught others’ attention, propelling her into an editor role at Vogue.
After years of writing, editing, and managing, Wang felt stalled—her growth plateaued. So, she began exploring her next move, experimenting with new ideas and gathering data about what aligned with her interests and values.
Wang adopted a beginner’s mindset: she took classes, interned, and wasn’t afraid to be the rookie. Her network—another vital remix tool—played a huge role. Though her father declined to back her first idea (a toy company), he became instrumental in launching her bridal business.
What catalyzed her leap into wedding fashion? The frustration of not finding a dress that matched her sophisticated taste at age 40. What began as an experiment turned into a thriving business, with Wang leveraging her vast network, including her skating connections, to expand into costumes for the rink.
Like Vera Wang, your career remix doesn’t have to follow a traditional path. It’s about combining what you know, embracing new opportunities, and staying curious. As we head into the new year, ask yourself: What ingredients do you already have, and what’s your next recipe for success?
